Introduction#

This jupyter book comprises the Multi-hazard Risk Assessment developed as the part of the Pacific Resilience Program (PREP) funded by the World Bank and implemented at the regional and national level by the Pacific Community, Pacific Island Forum Secretariat and Samoa, Tonga, Marshall Islands and Vanuatu. The socio-econocmic quantification of historical and synthetic Tropical Cyclones and Swells damages aims at being an essencial tool for decision support and risk management.

The risk assessment workflow described in this book supports multi-hazard risk assessment and provides an event-based probabilistic approach that is suitable for a wide range of resolutions, from whole-country to detailed local studies.

The methodology implements the concept of risk as in IPCC (2014):

HAZARD: CLimate -related drivers, where the physical characteristics of each unit are taken into consideration

EXPOSURE: The presence of people, livelihoods, species or ecosystems, environmental services and resources, infraestructure, or economic, social or cultural assets in places that could be adversely affected

VULNERABILITY: The propensity or predisposition to be adversely affected. Vulnerability encompasses a variety of concepts including sensitivity or susceptibility to harm and lack of capacity to cope and adapt
