About me:
My full name is Andres Iglesias Prieto (yes, two family names - from my father and mother - as usual in Spain). I am Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences of the University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain. I have recently been the Head of Department for a four-years term (July 2008-July 2012), the second largest department in our University with a teaching academic staff of 63 members. I have also been its Postgraduate Studies Coordinator for almost seven years (Nov. 2005-July 2012). During this period, our Ph.D. program was awarded with the Mencion de Calidad (Quality Award) of the Spanish Ministry of Education, a distinction for the best Ph.D. official programs in the country. We got this recognition in 2005 and renewed it every year until 2010. That year, we adapted our new Master+Doctorate program to the European Area of Higher Education. The new program has been recently awarded with the Mencion de Excelencia (Excellence Award), an upgrade over the previous Quality Award, as it is awarded to a very restricted set of Ph.D. programs with the very best standards of quality. I am also the leader of the Computer Graphics and Geometric Modeling research group.
I received my B.Sc. degree in Mathematics in 1992 and my Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics in 1995, both at the University of Cantabria. My thesis was about functional equations (see my book on this topic). I also worked in chaotic dynamical systems, fractals, symbolic computation (I co-authored the first book in Spanish about Mathematica, currently in its third edition), artificial intelligence and, more recently, computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) and computer graphics. So far, I have published 122 international papers on different topics and 13 books (1 by Elsevier, 6 by Springer-Verlag, 3 by IEEE CS Press, 2 by Thomson Publishers). For more details, go to the "Publications" link above.
I have been chairman and organizer of 38 international events on computer graphics and symbolic computation, including the conferences ICMS'2006 (over 100 attendees) and ICCSA'2011 (more than 300 attendees). I have also been steering committee member of 11 international conferences and program committee member of 145 international conferences and workshops.
I have been reviewer of 131 international conferences. I have also reviewed 74 international papers (52 ISI-indexed papers) submitted to 38 scientific journals (26 ISI-indexed journals). In addition, I served as Scientific Expert Evaluator for research institutions such as (among others) National Science Foundation (USA) and the European Research Agency-ERA (7th. Framework Programme funded by the European Commission) along with other public research agencies in countries such as Canada, Cyprus, Iceland and Spain. For more details, go to the "Reviews" link above.
I have been a University teacher for over 20 years. During that time, I taught 14 different subjects in 10 different undergraduate degrees, mostly in Engineering, totaling about 277 credits. I also taught about 58 credits in postgraduate courses in 12 different postgraduate programs in 5 countries. Evaluation results of my teaching activity are amongst the very best in my university, well within the top 10%. These good results are also obtained regularly, regardless of the subject being taught and the degree and year in which it is taught. For more details, go to the "Teaching" link above.
I am a Committee Member of the IFIP Technical Committee 5- Information Technology Applications, Workgroup 5.10 - Computer Graphics and Virtual Worlds.
