Teaching Activities

I have a huge experience as a teacher, the result of a long career as a University teacher for over 20 years. During that period, I taught 14 different subjects in 10 different undergraduate degrees, mostly in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Electronical, Civil, Public Works, Industrial, Computer Science) but also in Mathematics and Physics. In total, I taught about 277 credits in undergraduate courses.

I also taught 11 different subjects in postgraduate studies, including: Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD), Computer Graphics, Chaotic Dynamical Systems, Fractals and Multifractals, Artificial Intelligence, Numerical Methods, Symbolic Computation, Mathematica, etc. In total, I taught about 58 credits in postgraduate courses in 12 different postgraduate programs in 5 countries.

I have also participated as a teacher in other courses, such as teacher training courses, research courses, open courses and the like.

By Aug. 2012, I have taught about 344 credits overall. Here, you can find a brief summary of my annual teaching activities.

Quality Assessment of Teaching Activity

I have been widely seen as a very good teacher. In general, my evaluation scores are amongst the very best in my university, well within the top 10%. These scores are very regular, sustained over time regardless of the subject being taught and the degree and year in which it is taught.

The University of Cantabria performs annual evaluations about the quality of teaching activities of all academic staff since 1998. At the beginning, they were basically based on individual yet anonymous questionnaires given to students of each course in order to evaluate the teaching activity of their instructors. More recently, the university has joined to a national quality assessment program of university education promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science and called DOCENTIA. This program ensures that the quality assessment is unique for all national universities and it is carried out in a highly professional way. Under this program, teaching activity is evaluated annually for each subject where teachers give a minimum of 3 credits. Evaluation is performed at three levels: teachers (self-report), students (survey) and academic leaders (report).

Evaluation results are given in numeric format, from 0 (the lowest) to 5 (the highest), for all items of the survey. Then, teacher's activity is rated according to the mean average and classified into some groups accordingly. Grade below 2.5 is considered unfavorable, within the range 2.5-3.5 is considered favorable, and above 3.5 is considered very favorable.

Undergraduate teaching activity:

Under this procedure, my undergraduate teaching activity for the period 1998-2005 has been recognized as: above 3.5, very favorable. Since 2005, the teaching activity is evaluated on an annual basis. My evaluation results are as follows:

Postgraduate teaching activity:

Postgraduate teaching activity at the University of Cantabria has been firstly evaluated in the academic year 2009-10. Using the same procedure described above, my evaluation results for the four courses I taught are:
