About me

Basic Data

In July 2008 I became the new chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences of the University of Cantabria, in Santander (Spain). With 63 members, it is the second largest department in our University. Since Oct. 2002, I am Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences of the University of Cantabria, in Santander (Spain). Since Nov. 2005 I am also the coordinator for Ph.D. studies in my department. I am proud that our Ph.D. program has been awarded with the Mención de Calidad (Quality Award) of the Spanish Ministry of Education, a distinction for the best Ph.D. official programs in the country. We got this recognition in 2005 and renewed it every year since then. The last evaluation gave us the mention for the period 2008-2012. Currently, we are in the process of adapting our post-graduate courses to the new European Area of Higher Education of Bologna's declaration. Our new Master+Doctorate program has been designed according these new principles and regulations. The Ph.D. program of this new post-graduate studies was also awarded with the "Mención de Calidad" in 2007.

I received my B.Sc. degree in Mathematics in 1992 and my Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics in 1995, both at the University of Cantabria. My thesis was about functional equations (see my book on this topic). I also worked in chaotic dynamical systems, fractals, symbolic computation (I co-authored the first book in Spanish about Mathematica, currently in its third edition), artificial intelligence and, more recently, computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) and computer graphics.

Organizer/IPC at international conferences

So far, I have been chairman and organizer of 33 international events on computer graphics and symbolic computation, and program committee member of 123 international conferences and workshops.

Reviewer

I have been reviewer of 113 international conferences. I have also reviewed 45 international papers (28 ISI-indexed papers) submitted to 26 scientific journals (16 ISI-indexed journals). I have reviewed papers for (among others) the following ISI-indexed journals:
In addition, I served as Scientific Expert Evaluator for research institutions such as (among others) National Science Foundation (USA) or the European Research Agency-ERA (7th. Framework Programme funded by the European Commission) along with other public research agencies in countries such as Canada, Cyprus, Iceland and Spain.

Publications

I have published 120 international papers on different topics and 13 books (1 by Elsevier Publ., 6 by Springer-Verlag, 3 by IEEE CS Press, 2 by Thomson Publ.).

Editorial Member at journals

Currently, I am Associate Editor of the journals "ISRN Computer Graphics Journal", "Transactions on Computational Science", "Int. Journal of Computer Graphics and CAD/CAM", "Int. Journal of Computational Science", "International Journal of Computer Information Systems and Industrial Management Applications, IJCISIM" and "International Journal of Biometrics", member of the Editorial Board of the journals "Advances in Computational Science and Technology", "International Journal of Advanced Research in Computer Science", "Journal of Convergence Information Technology", "Int. Journal of Future Generation Communication and Networking", "International Journal of Advanced Science and Technology" and "Int. Journal of Digital Content Technology and its Applications" and member of the International Reviewing Board of the journals "Int. Journal of Information Technology and Web Engineering" and "Int. Journal of Computational Intelligence Research". I have also been Guest Editor of one Special Issue and one Special Section in the journal "Future Generation Computer Systems" and one Special Issue of the journal "Advances in Computational Science and Technology".

During the period Oct. 2004 - Oct. 2005 I was Visiting Researcher at the Laboratory of Advanced Research of the University of Tsukuba (Japan) for a sabbatical year stay in that beautiful city. My counterpart was Prof. Tetsuo Ida, a well reputed expert in symbolic computation and related areas. I also have had research stays in (among others) the Wessex Institute of Technology-WIT (Southampton, UK) and International Center of Theoretical Physics-ICTP (Trieste, Italy) and Toho University (Japan).
