How to Get to Santander

Travelling by airplane

The airport is five kilometers away from downtown Santander and it has daily connections with Madrid and Barcelona. It also has flights from other Spanish towns. These domestic flights are operated by IBERIA. There are also international flights, which are operated by the low cost Irish company RYANAIR. There are flights connecting London-Santander, Rome-Santander and Frankfurt-Santander.

Taxis and buses are available at the airport for transportation to the hotel.

As an alternative, you can take a plane to Madrid (400 km to the South) or Bilbao (100 km to the East) and then arrive in Santander by train or bus.

Travelling by train

There are several trains connecting Santander and Madrid, with a expected trip duration of about five hours. Information about timetables can be obtained in the web page of the Spanish railroad company RENFE. The Santander train station is located in the center of the city. Taxis are available at the train station for transportation to the hotel.

Travelling by bus or car

There are many buses from Madrid, Bilbao, Hendaye/Irun, to and from Santander. Bus-trips are a cheap and popular way for travelling in Spain. All buses stop in Santander at the bus station, located in front of the railroad station.

If you drive your own car or a rented car, you can arrive at Santander from the south (free highway Madrid-Burgos, then follow a mountain road in good condition to Torrelavega and then pick again the highway to Santander). About four hours.

From the east (paying highway Hendaye-Bilbao, free highway Bilbao-Santander). About 60 minutes Bilbao-Santander, two/three hours Santander/ Hendaye (french border).

From the west (a good road close to the seaside between Oviedo and Santander, most of it a highway). Takes 2 1/2 hours for the trip Santander/Oviedo.

Travelling by boat

Twice a week, there is a ferry boat connecting Santander with Plymouth (UK). The trip lasts about 18 hours, and it is operated by BRITTANY FERRIES. The conference timetable is suited to those using this ferry.
