Forth is a simple postfix programming system which prioritises extensibility over language features. As such it can profitably exploit ideas from every branch of computer science and electronic engineering. Its applicability ranges over interactive programming of small microcontrollers, powerful visual development environments, the programming of distributed agents communicating via open protocols, and system configuration using the IEEE Standard Open Firmware which is used to provide plug and play style features on Power PC's, Sun Workstations and PowerMacs.

A new standards process (Forth 200x) for updating the '94 standard is underway. It will produce a formal standards document; proposals for changes to the '94 standard should run through the RfD/CfV process before being discussed at the standards meeting. A next standards meeting was held on the day before the EuroForth 2005 Conference, i.e., on October 20th, 2005. Read about it here.
